Volunteering
and support
Support from international volunteers is the lifeblood of CALM Africa’s
activities. While tools like ambition, vision and determination
exist in abundance, physical and financial resources, sadly, do
not. |
 |
Volunteer
with CALM and you can:
• Teach in one of our nursery, primary or secondary
education centres
• Help troubled youths gain practical skills at one
of our vocational learning centres
• Contribute to the community by helping with home visits,
assessments and designing intervention plans for some of Uganda’s
poorest children and families
• Use your professional skills to help us further develop
the services we offer to vulnerable young people in Uganda
and across Africa
• OR… tell us how you think you can help in other
ways |
Former
volunteers speak of their time in Uganda being a life-changing
experience – opening their eyes to the issues that exist
and the determination of a young nation to recover from the horrors
of its past.
Volunteers' experiences with CALM Africa:
“I
was in the Rakai district of Uganda for 2 months in early 2008.
It was an experience I will never forget. I saw the best and worst
that life has to offer. The worst being the conditions that people
are forced to live in. The best being the way they look after
each other and get on with their lives with smiles, generosity
and determination. Those I met in Uganda are some of the most
gracious and nicest people I have met, in a very beautiful country.
Without CALM, the lives of these people would be unimaginably
worse than they are. During my time there I was struck with how
widespread the charity acts, and not only what they are doing
on a day to day basis, but also all the things they have planned
for the future. I hope to be a continued part of CALM's mission
to help the people of Uganda, and consider it a privilege to have
met the people of Rakai.”...Simon
Boterill, UK, 2008
“The
thing I will remember most about my time in Uganda is the sense
of optimism for the future. I have come away with such respect
for these young people. Despite the horrors of their past which
I still cannot comprehend – they maintain that they are
blessed. Blessed, perhaps, but poor. Internationally, if youth
were more like these young men and women, the world would certainly
be a better place for it. This experience has changed me forever,
and I will certainly be returning.”...Ebony
Kenny, Australia, 2008
“My
time in Uganda was absolutely amazing. The charity CALM does some
brilliant work and it was really good to be a part of it. I spent
12 weeks working in Kyotera and Kiganda, visiting vulnerable families
and making assessments. It was really good to see things changing,
especially with the construction of two new water tanks and the
day-care classroom. Best of all was experiencing a new culture
first-hand and the welcome we got from the local communities was
out of this world. It became a home away from home and an experience
I will never forget.”...Ruth
Challenger, UK
“The
work that C.A.L.M Africa does is vital as it provides hope for
those without.”...Keith
Fermin, UK, 2008

Our
Future
With the assistance of volunteers and supporters from around the
world, we are making an invaluable contribution to the lives of
vulnerable children, particularly within Uganda. CALM Africa will
continue to develop its programmes and initiatives within this
region and look to extend them throughout eastern Africa.
If
you’d like to get involved or find out more, please contact
either James Kimera Sekiwanuka or Joseph Luganda. If you are interested
in volunteering, we can also put you in touch with previous volunteers
